What does the term Modem stand for?

The term Modem stands for MOdulator-DEModulator.

A modem is a device that converts (modulates) digital data from a computer or other digital device into an analog signal for transmission over analog communication lines (such as telephone lines or radio waves). At the receiving end, the modem demodulates the incoming analog signal back into digital data, making it understandable to the receiving device.

- Modulation: The process of converting digital data into an analog signal.

- Demodulation: The process of converting the received analog signal back into digital data.

Modems are essential for communication over long distances, where digital signals cannot be directly transmitted, such as in traditional dial-up internet connections and some broadband services.
